Having a Role Model

Giving young people like Jay a bright future.

Jay, now 17, struggled at school and was at risk of getting into trouble. KPC Youth in Bridgend gave him somewhere safe to socialise and role models to turn to. He’s now an apprentice electrician.

He said: “We would all meet up there and use the skate park or use the music room to write lyrics for songs or rapping. I got to know the staff well and sometimes turned to them for advice and they would be more than happy to sit with me and talk things through.”

KPC Youth provides 350 young people with positive activities and support.

Initially based in a cabin donated by the local prison, KPC now includes a skate park, BMX track, football pitch, music room, garden and play area. Staff also signpost young people to other resources. They talk to them about finding work or apprenticeships and help them with family or relationship problems. Police say KPC has contributed to a 60% drop in youth crime.

In 2011, a BBC Children in Need grant of £105,000 funded three KPC youth workers for three years. A new grant funds its Fit4Life project to help young people develop resilience and healthy lifestyles.

Your donations help KPC enable young people like Jay to reach their potential and stay safe.
