Ten Days to Refurbish a House

Colleagues take on the challenge of renovating a house with BBC DIY SOS.

Over 120 colleagues from our Newport offices spent over 1,000 volunteering hours supporting a project with BBC’s DIY SOS.

The aim was to transform the family home of Charlotte and Rob from Monmouth in Wales by building an extension to their two bedroom semi-detached house.

Following the birth of her healthy twin boys Charlotte suffered a serious stroke. She has taught herself to walk again and is able to say a few words, but was limited by the lack of space and facilities to care for herself, so is dependent on help.

The development included building a double storey rear extension, creating space for a physio room and an en-suite wet room for Charlotte, as well as the essential extra bedroom for a live-in carer.

Hundreds of builders, friends, family and local businesses got involved to help, including our colleagues, who all shared their skills and took away some great memories. One colleague summed up the day: “It was a very emotional reveal and the family was delighted with the result. It will make a huge difference to their day to day life. It was a privilege to be involved and great to know we were doing something positive!”
