Using the power of music

Boom! Samba Drumming uses music to break down social barriers and unite people.

Sarah Sutton set up Boom! Samba Drumming after being inspired by the power of music to bring people together. Boom! runs workshops for young people, the elderly, people with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, teaching them about drums, the history of Brazilian music and the joy of performing as a group. It allows the members to rapidly build confidence and develop new skills as well as performing as a group.

Sarah is currently being supported by the Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Programme to develop her enterprise and has been provided with a financial grant, learning programme with the School for Social Entrepreneurs and a business mentor from the Group. Thanks to this support, Sarah’s been able to think about new opportunities and develop a network of contacts to help her increase the social outreach of her enterprise.

Sarah said: “Founding Boom! has opened up a great number of opportunities to develop new skills and learn about myself, as well as having a huge impact on the confidence and well-being of people who take part in the samba drumming workshops. The Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs programme has encouraged me to believe in my ideas and the peer support, through networking with other social entrepreneurs on the programme has proved invaluable”.
